Step-1: Machine Set-Up

  • Welding Gun Set-Up:

The welding gun contains the usable electrode wire. The welding gun is attached to the MIG welder to maintain the power supply between the wires. The welding gun has a trigger, with which you can control the flow of electricity and feed the wires. This gun creates strong pressure between the wire and a metal workpiece. The pressure generates heat which fuses the workpiece material, and the wire material to form a weld. The most important thing to pay attention to when welding is here.

  • Ground clamp selection:

A ground clamp is used to attach the ground cable to the workpiece. It is directly connected to the work or to the table on which the work will be done. Welding wires, ground wires, and electrode wires are important parts of the welding circuit. Select the ground clamp considering the authority and local conditions.

This ground clamp completes the circuit between the cathode, the welding gun, and the welder of the T circuit. The ground clamp connects well with the welded part to work. Any rust or paint should be removed to prevent it from interfering with the work.

Step-2: Wear Safety Equipment

You should take the safety measures of MIG welding seriously, as this welding emits a lot of heat and harmful light, so you need to take some steps to protect yourself.

  •  Wearing Welding Mask:

 It is usually recommended to wear a MIG welding helmet with lens number 6 for work up to 30 amps. And if it is more than 400 amperes then lens number 14 is recommended to be used. (See table below).

Close your eyes as soon as you start casting, if you can see the arc then you need to wear a darker lens.

  •  Wear Steel-Clad Boots:

Steel-clad boots are severely durable. They are made from Overgaard leather so they have to be worn for a long time after casting. You should wear it to prevent abrasion around the cast. Also, it protects from sparks.

  • Safety Goggles:

Welders need to wear safety goggles to protect their eyes from the flash. Welding without these goggles can cause permanent damage to eyesight. You must wear goggles with a side shield compliant with ANSI Z87. Goggles also protect the eyes from dust and radiation. GMAW usually uses goggles numbers 11-12.

  • Covering Long Hair:

If you have long hair, it should be covered. If you don’t, I would suggest a French braid for your hair. If you don’t do this too, you can tie it back and braid it. Follow any one of these. I would suggest wearing a French braid and a helmet.

  • Protective Clothing:

You must protect your eyes, face, and body from sparks, ultraviolet radiation, and hot metal when welding. For this, you need to wear oil-free, non-melted, flame-resistant protective clothing. Authorized protective clothing includes under-sleeves, aprons, jackets, and coats, and includes. You can also wear leather leggings.

  • Leather Gloves:

Casting is a very risky job so you need to wear gloves to protect both the wrists and the hands. This will help protect you from electric shock. Gloves also provide improved grip during casting and prevent abrasion. These MIG welding gloves are made from top-grain cowhide and goatskin or deerskin.

  • Casting Sleeve:

This cast sleeve is made from treated cotton. It protects you from heat and sparks. It is lighter than leather and provides better protection. Sometimes welding rays, sparks, spatters, and molten metal are worn on your arm. This sleeve is pulled over the wrist during casting which protects you from the spark of fire during casting.

  • Knee Pads:

It will protect you from abrasions, cuts, and heat. They are light, flexible, and overall comfortable. Using a knee pad reduces the impact felt on your knees and protects your knee cap. These give you a more comfortable feeling. Knee pads should be worn on tasks that take a long time on your knees, such as welding, roofing, tiling, and more.

Step-3: Prepare The Weld

Care must be taken to ensure that the joints are free of grease, oil, wax layer, and paint before welding the workpiece together. Also, the following points should be kept in mind.

  • Check To Shield Gas Valve:

Make sure the shielding gas valve is open. Then check if 20ft3 / hour is flowing in the regulator. Turn on the welder and attach the grounding clamp to your welding table. It also allows you to attach directly to the metal. Then you have to do the power setting.

  • The Metal:

To weld by MIG Welder, hold the trigger, and touch it on your workpiece. Did you see a great result? Yes, it was a wonderful experience. Now give this casting 5 minutes to strengthen and clean the metal. This will help you to add any broken edges.

Step-4: Placing A Bead:

A welding bead is made in a single operation during the welding process. Notice how the cast is evolving during casting. See if the pieces of the material are melting together. If you see a hole in the workpiece,  it means that the energy has become too much which is causing the solder to melt.

Step-5: Welding Metal Together

All checked so now you can start your welding work. You can continue welding as you wish. However, it is better to cast any stock from the bottom to the top. Pushing upwards or forwards with a welding gun. But in the beginning, you can start from any direction.

Step-6: Grind Down The Weld:

This depends on how skilled you are at welding. If you can do welding well, grinding may not be required. However, if welded well, the welded metal becomes more beautiful and smooth. However, it has some bad effects such as grinding and weakening the metal. Therefore grinding should be done carefully to maintain the integrity of the structure.

Step-7: Turn Off The Welder: 

Since the work is almost finished, turn off the power supply and machine to turn off the welder. Open your gloves at the end of all, and keep the safety equipment open one by one. Keep goggles, your helmet, etc. open. One thing to keep in mind is not to touch the welded object immediately, as it may be hot then. Once the metal has cooled, remove the ground clamp and loosen the gloves.

Step 5: Travel speed:

Travel speed lets you know how fast you are welding, that is, how fast the stick welder’s gun is moving in the workplace. If you divide the distance by time, you will get the average travel speed of stick welding. The travel speed of the welding machine is a very important factor in arc welding. The speed of travel determines how much heat is accumulating in the workpiece.
